Guyana, HQ triumph at 58th edition of the GPF Annual Athletics Championship

AT the conclusion of the 58th Edition of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) annual Athletics Championship, Team Guyana in the International category and Force Headquarters were adjudged champions of the four-day athletics championship held at the police Sports Club ground Eve Leary. Team Guyana finished first in the A-Class category with 301 points ahead of Trinidad & Tobago with 92 points and Antigua & Barbuda with 20 points.
In the B-Class category Force Headquarters won with 475 points ahead of A Division with 373 points, C Division  were third with 244 points and B Division finished last with 207 points.
Tiffany Carto copped the Female Youth Club Athlete champion prize while T. Garraway finished as the top Male Youth Club Athlete.
Trinidad & Tobago’s N. Thomas won the Overseas Female Championship Trophy. The Male Overseas was won by her countryman Sheldon Mason.
The Runner-up Champion Athlete was jointly shared by Guyanese Natasha Alder and Althea Moore while the Champion Athlete Male B’ Class was won by Troy Williams.
Runner-up A-Class Male was shared by Julio Sinclair and Shawn Sinclair while the Champion A-Class Athlete was won by Keith Roberts.
The final day’s proceedings commenced with the traditional march past of all the athletes which followed the opening ceremony, with the special address from acting Commissioner of Police Leroy Brumell DSM.
B-Division were adjudged winners of the march past event, gaining a trophy and $100 000 cash for their performance, A-Division came second and took away $75 000 and a trophy, third place went to Special Constabulary who copped $50 000 and a trophy while the other groups collected $25 000 each for their participation.
In his short address, Brumell indicated that the staging of the event is at a time when the Olympics is being held in London so he hoped that it would inspire the participating athletes to attain excellence, and with that he made special mention of their own Lance Corporal 20726 Winston George, who is representing his country and the Guyana Police Force at the Olympics.
He then took the opportunity to welcome the visiting CARICOM territories and wished them the best in their goals they have set for themselves.
Also present were Divisional Commanders and other senior officers of the Guyana Police Force, members and executive of the Athletics Association of Guyana, other senior members of the disciplinary forces and other special invitees.
