NATIONAL featherweight champion Clive Atwell threw in a clinical performance to earn a TKO over Revlon Lake in their Junior Lightweight clash on the 25th ProAm boxing card on Friday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Fighting in the main event, Atwell connected with a vicious right hook to the face of the Barbados-based Lake two minutes 55 seconds into round five of the scheduled eight-rounder to seal the deal.
With the hit, Lake’s camp threw in the towel, as he was having trouble with his mouth guard, which fell out at least three times during the bout.
In the other professional fights, Gladwin Dorway remained unbeaten with a third round knockout of Anson Green in their four-round Junior Welterweight clash; Richard Williamson earned a unanimous decision over fellow debutant Dilan Allicock in their four-round Bantamweight contest, while Patrick Boston won a controversial majority decision over an outraged Kishan Simon, who was making his first appearance as a professional, in a Catchweight bout.
On the amateur side, Christopher Tinnerman got the better of Kevon Mulling in the 70-74lb class; Tefon Green defeated Albert Thomas at 90-94lb; Shaka Moore prevailed over Royan Sumner at 95-99lb and Romeo Norville beat Ron Smith at Middleweight.
The feature bout promised much as Atwell and Lake went after each other in the opening exchanges, but the fight petered out into a one-sided affair as Atwell’s craft and experience proved the difference in the latter stages.
After an even opening round, Lake stepped up the tempo in round two, landing some solid left hooks and forcing Atwell on the defensive. Much of the same continued in the ensuing round, but Atwell did manage to land a few telling blows towards the tai-end of round three, shifting Lake with a brutal right hook.
At the start of round four, Atwell brought out the jabs and upper cuts, and proceeded to dominate the round, as Lake was peppered with punches to the head and torso.
Visibly shaken from Atwell’s onslaught, Lake faced a battle for survival at the start of round five, and it didn’t last long before his camp decided that enough was enough. A powerful right hook that landed flush on the face was all that was needed to convince Lake’s corner that he was not fit to continue.
He bounced off the ropes and landed on the canvas, and though he did manage to get back on his feet, coach Siebert Blake thought it wise to end the contest and hand Atwell a convincing win.
At the interval between the amateur and professional fights, Tamara Rodney of Courts (Guyana) Inc. presented hampers to all the participating amateur boxers, while Digicel pampered patrons with their credit and tee-shirt giveaways.
