JAMAICAN Braithe Thompson appeared in court yesterday, charged with entering the country illegally. Before Acting Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, it was alleged that, on July 23 at Springlands, Corentyne, Berbice, he entered Guyana, by speedboat from Suriname, without the consent of an immigration officer.
He pleaded guilty and was remanded to prison pending deportation.
According to the police prosecutor, Corporal Denise Booker, the prisoner obtained a Guyanese birth certificate bearing the name Troy Samuel Brocliffe while he stayed at a Corentyne hotel.
The prosecutor said he was attempting to obtain a Guyanese travel document at the Central Immigration and Passport Office where he produced the fake birth certificate.
The court heard that immigration officers, after questioning the alien, realised that there was something suspicious and after further questions, he was taken into custody.
Thompson was fined $30,000 and is to remain in custody until deported.
