DEPUTY COMMISSIONER of Police, (Law Enforcement), Mr. Seelall Persaud on Tuesday said that like any other organisation the Guyana Police Force (GPF) has its share of challenges in which they operate in a revolutionary society where nothing is stable but despite that they are constantly keeping apace in an effort to improve the Force. He was responding to questions posed by reporters at the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) Drill Square, Eve Leary after the Police Awards Ceremony on Tuesday.
Persaud added that the GPF has to keep abreast and change their tactics, techniques, use state of the art technology and they are also challenges there too to train and acquire technology.
He stated that there are challenges but they are moving as the society moves, challenges with recruitment, training, operations all kinds of things and that’s what they are about meeting those challenges.
Persaud, when asked about the state of police prosecution said that he could be happier in which happiness is considered a state of mind but admitted there are some challenges with prosecutions.
He noted that there are a lot of court cases in the magistrates’ court which are prosecuted by police prosecutors who are not as trained as their counterparts on the other side, who are qualified lawyers, but they will get there someday since they are developing.
Persaud said that the sufficiency of evidence again is also centred around the use of technology like other countries do in which they are able to corroborate with the witnesses stories since the police can only present what is available.
When asked whether the police have enough evidence that some ranks are being paid by media houses to provide information, Persaud said that if they had evidence of it they would have prosecuted the ranks both criminally and departmentally because it is a breach of the regulations governing the police force.
He admitted that they have a lot of information but nothing solid so far but in time they will gather enough evidence to take the necessary course of action since that move by some ranks negatively impacts on some investigations.
Persaud however, urged ranks to desist from such practice and also asked reporters to call the Police Public Relations Office for information since they have nothing to hide.
