In wake of deadly Linden protest… WEST DEM, EAST BANK CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE CALL FOR PEACE AND STABILITY

THE West Demerara and East Bank Chambers of Commerce and Industry have expressed hope for peace and calm to prevail and that constructive dialogue take its course for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing Linden protest. The Chambers, in a joint statement issued yesterday, in the wake of the loss of lives in the mining town of Linden during Wednesday’s protest, also expressed the hope that all political leaders will work towards harnessing peace and stability for the progress of Guyana and the Guyanese people.
The full text of the statement is as follows:
“Following the unfortunate events of Wednesday 18th July, 2012 which extended to the loss of lives in the town of Linden, we the members of our chambers express the hope for peace and calm to prevail and that constructive dialogue take its course for a peaceful resolution.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to the families who have lost their loved ones under these circumstances. We are also calling on the police and security personnel who offer their services and protection not to be provoked to the extreme but to be cautious and exercise restraint under such testing situations. It should be noted that the wanton destruction of properties and the loss of lives will only add sufferings in the region.
It is our expressed hope that all political leaders will work towards harnessing peace and stability for the progress of our people and country. We call on all leaders to advocate for peace through dialogue on a common ground of understanding.”
