THE China Harbours Engineering Corporation (CHEC) on Wednesday responded to the A Partnership for National Unity’s concerns, after the political party expressed distaste for not being engaged during a visit of a high-level CHEC delegation here last week. APNU’s Shadow Public Works Minister Joseph Harmon had written to the state-owned company hired to remodel the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), after the team visited Guyana and met with government and private sector officials, but “ignored” the opposition.
CHEC, in the letter which was made public Wednesday, said while it recognizes the important role of the opposition, the “short” visit was to meet primarily with officials of the Works ministry.
“Please note that the specific purpose of the visit was to meet with the Ministry of Public Works of the Government of Guyana, to provide a brief on issues that have been published in the media in the recent weeks. Given the issues under discussions, we were obliged to answer all questions held by the government with the view to advancing the project,” CHEC’s Regional Director for the Americas Zhongdong Thang said in the letter.
Zhongdong also apologized for not engaging the opposition. “We regret that we were unable to meet with the parliamentary opposition of Guyana and apologies for this omission,” he stated.
He assured that his company will engage the opposition in the future on the airport expansion and any other project it will undertake in Guyana.
