CHESS is heading to new terrain this weekend when Bartica hosts a Banks DIH/Malta Supreme one-day Rapid tournament this Sunday at the Bartica Secondary School, Seventh Avenue. Banks DIH Brand Manager for non-alcoholic malts, Clayton McKenzie, presented the sponsorship cheque to secretary of the Guyana Chess Federation, Vishnu Rampersaud, on Wednesday at the company’s Thirst Park complex.
Banks DIH Communications Manager Troy Peters said his company continues to support the Guyana Chess Federation in its efforts to decentralise the game locally.
“Banks DIH has been established in Bartica for many years and we take this opportunity to welcome the chess players and officials to the riverine community. We expect a highly competitive tournament under the Malta Supreme brand.
Malta Supreme and the Federation are working closely in the development of chess locally and we urge members of that community to compete and support the players who will be in action,” he said.
Rampersaud expressed gratitude to the company for supporting chess as the federation continues to spread the noble pastime by way of competition and the distribution of chess material.
Trophies, medals and chess sets would be awarded to prize-winners. Over a dozen sets would be distributed.
Registration begins at 09:00hrs at the venue and the competition gets under way one hour later. The tournament consists of seven rounds with a junior category and a senior category. Registration fee is $500 each for adults and $200 for children.
Players would each have 20 minutes for each round to complete their game. Each round of the tournament is expected to last a maximum 40 minutes. The Guyana Chess Federation will be conducting the competition and will provide chess clocks for the players. Players with tournament-size chess sets can bring those along.
