Police trying to ascertain Baksh’s murder beneficiaries
CRIME Chief Seelall Persaud said yesterday that police are trying to ascertain who stands to benefit from the murder and two acts of arson at storage bonds owned by recently executed businessman Mohamed Shalahudeen Bacchus Baksh. The Deputy Commissioner said the investigations are very active, but up to press time, no one was arrested in connection with the destruction.
However, in relation to the execution-style killing of the Managing Director of Pest Control Plus, a man was held and released on bail, while another is being sought.
On June 15, Baksh was fatally shot at point blank range by one of two gunmen in a Thomas Street, Georgetown restaurant and bar, where he was socialising with friends.
Since his death, two properties he was renting at different city locations were destroyed by deliberately set fires, which left millions of dollars in losses.
One of the conflagrations occurred at Lot 16 Sheriff Street, Campbellville and the other at Lot 322 Rohinital Street, Prashad Nagar.
No clear motive has yet been established for the assassination of Baksh, who had previously survived a shooting attempt on his life on Lamaha Street, Georgetown in 2008.
Baksh, 42, of Bel Air Gardens and of Lot 9 Pouderoyen, WBD, proprietor of Pest Control Plus, was buried after being accorded Muslim rites at Versailles Cemetery, following the viewing and Janaaza in Versailles Masjid Compound, West Bank Demerara.
