THE youthful Guysuco Training Centre/Port Mourant 1 (GTC/PM1) volleyball team defeated Rollers of New Amsterdam to capture the first place trophy when the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) held its second annual Trophy Stall competition at the GTM hardcourt last Sunday in Berbice. The GTC/PM 1 team played brilliantly all day in the blistering sunshine during the round-robin stage of the competition and turned up the passion in the final with excellent spiking by Creston Rodney and Quacy Matheson to edge out Rollers 25 -23 in a game that was a see-saw battle which had the small crowd of spectators all fired up.
On their way to the final, GTC/PM 1 swept aside GTC/PM 2, Three-Door Strikers, Falcons, Port Mourant Jaguars 1 and 2 respectively, while in the third place playoff, Port Mourant Jaguars 1 defeated Falcons of Reliance 25-20.
At the presentation ceremony held immediately after the completion of the competition, BVA president Gregory Rambarran thanked the sponsor, Ramesh Sunich for providing bigger and better trophies for 2012 and the Manager of GTM for granting the Association the opportunity to use the hard-court.
He also thanked the officials (referees and linesmen) and participating teams and took the time to congratulate the winners and outstanding players.
The top three finishers received trophies and volleyballs while medals for outstanding performances went to Rodney (MVP), with Errol Chase of Rollers and Surendra Motiepersaud being awarded for Outstanding Service..
Jaguars’ Julius Seenarine and Sean Wilson of Rollers were rewarded for good spiking while Navin Yadram of Three-Door Strikers won a ball for his good performance.
All of the officials received gifts from the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club and Food For The Poor Guyana Inc., while the trophies and prizes were handed over by BVA vice-president Levi Nedd and secretary Errol Chase.
