East Coast Demerara exercise…

SCU team captures, impounds 25 strays
THE Stray Catchers Unit (SCU) of the Ministry of Home Affairs conducted an exercise last week Tuesday between Plaisance and Lusignan, on East Coast Demerara.
It started at about 09:00 hrs and concluded at 15:00 hrs as the issue of animals on the roadway continues to be a problem.
Many of the villagers in targeted communities expressed their satisfaction at having the strays caught and impounded.
One of them, Rajwantie Singh, of La Bonne Intention, told the Guyana Chronicle her area has always been one harbouring strays and no matter what measures are taken, the owners do nothing about them.
She declared that animals are free to roam and, many times, a pedestrian has to wait on them to cross the road or stand at a safe distance for fear of being attacked.
Other residents, Naipaul Naidu, of Lusignan; Nizam Rahaman of Better Hope and Kamini Persaud of Chateau Margot, all had the same lament.
The stray catching team of six was accompanied by four policemen and they caught several cows, goats and sheep grazing on the roadside, with owners nowhere to be seen nor could they have been contacted.
At the conclusion of the exercise, about 25 animals were captured and impounded.
One of the SCU workers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the SCU intends to carry out more such exercises to ensure safer roadways.
