Remanded on drug, unlawful possession of ammo charges

LEYLAND Leo (no address given) was remanded to prison yesterday on charges of drug trafficking and unlawful possession of ammunition. Before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton, he pleaded not guilty to the offences, one of which said, on June 22, at Agricola, East Bank Demerara, he had 70 grammes of cannabis (marijuana) to traffick.
The other said he had 66 rounds of 2.43 Winchester shotgun ammunition.
The defendant told the court he owns a shop and, that day, he was in the washroom when police entered and he did not see where they made the find that they showed him when he emerged.
However, Police Corporal Simone Payne, prosecuting, had a different narrative.
She said the search was conducted in the defendant’s home where the illegal substance and the ammo were found in a tin.
The prosecutor said the items were discovered in the presence of the defendant and shown to him.
Leo has to be back in court on June 29.
