Lodge humble East Ruimveldt at Tucville
CHEERED on by a vocal group of supporters, Lodge Secondary defeated East Ruimveldt Secondary 4-0 at the Tucville ground yesterday, when action in the second annual Digicel-sponsored Inter-secondary school football tournament continued across Guyana. Those who gathered at the venue to witness the exciting matchup between the two were treated to some fantastic team football from both sides in the first 15 minutes of the first half, which saw Lodge’s Keith Fletcher, who enjoyed an excellent day in the field, torment East Ruimveldt’s defence.
Although Fletcher did not place his name on the score sheet until the fourth goal was scored, his assists and wonderfully taken free and corner kicks, saw his teammates find the back of the net, much to the delight of his schoolmates, who formed a vociferous cheerleading party.
Words such as ‘We not going anywhere, we right here’ and ‘Who are the champions, Lodge School’ rang out from the bleachers at the eastern corner of the venue, every time the green and black (with red Digicel bibs) units touch the ball, while boos ricocheted when East Ruimveldt had it in their possession.
The recording of the first goal was a gem, as Fletcher’s cross from a corner kick saw Travis Lyken hit home a rocket-like volley in the 18th minute, after one of his teammates had tried a ‘King Pele’ style bicycle kick and missed.
The scoreline stayed unchanged at lemon-time, but when play resumed, it was Fletcher who continued to lead several raids on the opposition, especially in their third of the field, where the ball was being played among Lodge Secondary for close to five minutes.
Kareem Johnson (48th) and Ryan Hackett (56th) found the back of the net to give their team a 3-0 lead, before Fletcher was asked to take a penalty kick which was awarded to his team, when Johnson was brought down in the 59th minute and he calmly placed the ball past the outstretched hands of East Ruimveldt custodian.
The scene that erupted when the final whistle sounded was more spectacular, as the same group of students who formed the cheerleading band, rushed on the field and continued their celebrations in front of their team’s substitute area – a full expression of the delight they felt having recorded a victory over the inaugural Scotiabank/Pepsi Academy winners.
Results from other matches are as follows: At the Carifesta Sports Complex ground, Brickdam Secondary emulated Lodge by crushing Cummings Lodge 4-0, with Travis Brandis recording a brace in the 16th and 70th minutes and Eon Sullivan another double in the 42nd and 60th minute..
