…his boat collides with one driven by his father
An 18-year-old lost his life on Monday at around midday, after the boat he was driving in the Barama River, North West District, crashed into a boat his father was driving in the gold mining area. Reports from Barama said both father and son were employed by the Da Silvas of the Lower Pomeroon when the accident occurred.
The deceased, Stevon Benn, who had a few days ago completed writing his CXC examination at the Charity Secondary School, was driving a boat to the worksite at a creek called “Punta Place”, in the Barama River, when his father, Lasroy Benn, who was driving another boat to the gold mining camp site, crashed into his boat, knocking him unconscious.
Reports said the father rushed to his son’s rescue and quickly took off for the Acquero hospital in Moruca, but the teenager died before reaching the hospital.
His body was brought to Charity by his father and other relatives, and taken to the mortuary.
His father was detained by police and released on bail. Investigations are ongoing.
