… after another armed robbery in city
DEPUTY Commissioner of Police (Law Enforcement) Mr. Seelall Persaud disclosed yesterday that another suspect has been arrested, while police are looking for two others following the hijacking of a car and its owner, and the armed robbery of a cambio dealer, all of which occurred on Monday, when Odel Chase was shot and killed in a confrontation with the police. Persaud said the group of four men had initially robbed a man of his motor car on Monday night at Water Lily and Hunter Streets in Albouystown, Georgetown. Afterwards, they went to America Street and robbed a cambio dealer of $1M in cash before fleeing. The police trailed the car to Sussex Street in Georgetown; and at about 21:30 hrs, when they saw the law men, occupants of the vehicle opened fire, ensuing a gun battle with the police, during which the four suspects exited the car.
After the gunfight, three suspects escaped while Odel Chase was found with two gunshot wounds. He died while being treated at the Georgetown Hospital.
Persaud noted that Chase, 22, had three separate cases of robbery-under-arms pending in the courts. He added that no cash or weapons were recovered at the scene of the shootout, but the motorcar, with a fake number plate plastered over the original, is lodged with the police.
The official police report of the incident is that ranks were responding to a 911 call that armed men in motor vehicle PNN 124 were firing shots in America Street, in the commercial heart of Georgetown. A mobile patrol later saw the motor car in Sussex Street, Albouystown; and as they approached the vehicle, they came under fire from the men, who had exited the vehicle. The ranks returned fire, three of the men managed to escape, while Odel Chase, 22, of James Street, Albouystown, subsequently succumbed to the injuries he had sustained in the exchange of gunfire.
Investigations revealed that, earlier, at about 21:00 hours, money changer Harold Francis, 43, of Quamina Street, Georgetown, had been attacked and robbed at America Street by three men armed with firearms. They took away a bag with over $1M in cash, and discharged rounds in the air as they escaped in motor car PNN 124.
Further investigations disclosed that PNN 124 was a false registration number used on the vehicle. The correct number is PMM 2122, and the car was allegedly stolen from the driver earlier in the evening by two men armed with firearms, during a stop at a traffic light along Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.
Odel Chase was before the courts on three charges of robbery-under-arms, during one of which Samantha Hollingsworth was shot and injured. He was on bail in these matters.
