Felicity fire was electrical, Hadfield Street still being investigated
FIRE of electricity origin gutted a concrete and wood one-flat house at Lot 22 Felicity Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara, on Monday, leaving a family of seven displaced. Chief Fire Officer, Marlon Gentle said, yesterday, that an electric iron was left plugged in and that resulted in the destruction of the modest house while, no one was at home about 13:01 hrs.
Those left homeless are Yasin Ashwin and his wife and five children, who also lost all their worldly possessions.
Meanwhile, Gentle said the Government Electrical Inspector has been asked to assist in investigating the Saturday night blaze which burnt through two floors of the G. Bacchus building on Hadfield Street, Georgetown.
The Fire Chief said the investigation is very active and firefighters have since revisited the scene in an effort to determine the cause of the conflagration.
The GFS responded to that call at the four-storey, where a supermarket on the ground and a storage area on the floor above quickly consumed, with five tenders and contained the conflagration to that edifice.
The GFS used a hydraulic lift to douse the flames that raged through two floors of the structure about 20:00 hrs.
Gentle said they are still probing the cause and it is too early to ascertain.
Two floors of stocks are damaged and the rest of the place sustained water damage but the firefighters managed to save Ashmin’s Trading Complex next door.
It was reported that, after a generator started, there was a loud explosion and thick smoke billowed from the Bacchus structure before fire was seen originating from inside.
