SHAWN Nidal Watkins, 42, of Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, was shot and killed by the police, on Saturday, following a cutlass attack on two ranks who had gone to arrest him for arson and domestic violence. A police report said, about 14:30hrs, two ranks, stationed in ‘D’ Division, at Leonora, responded to reports of domestic violence and arson at Met-en-Meerzorg, also on West Coast Demerara.
The cops had also received a report of threatening language at his mother’s Vergenoegen home when they went to get Watkins.
However, armed with two cutlasses and a knife, he attacked Corporal Williams, chopping him several times and Constable Solomon on his left hand after he had gone to the aid of Williams.
Watkins was shot in the process and died before receiving medical attention at Leonora Hospital, while the two injured policemen were admitted to Georgetown Public Hospital(GPH), where, up to press time, they were in serious condition.
