All is not lost with sports development

‘ATROCIOUS’ was the descriptive word used by an associate of mine who was in attendance at the just concluded 2012 President/Jefford Track Meet at Linden.
For the record, I was never there and persons chose to share their experience apart from the reports in the dailies and the television newscast.
I need the public to fully understand that I am based in the fields and over the years I have had many interactions with many sports personalities and it’s from being based in the fields that I am having an in-depth understanding of  many sports disciplines and their systems in Guyana. In return, I make an effort to relate information to the public via all four dailies because I honestly believe that they also need to be informed and they can use that information for healthy growing if they choose to.
In addition, I do pen my personal contributions and when those publications hit the newsprints, I have absolutely no influence over the editors’ decisions.
Just recently, I managed to get permission in gaining access to a breath- taking site in Guyana owned by a business magnate for an assignment and the liaison officer did indicate to me that my publications are fairly balanced and read. Again I would like to extend my gratitude for the consideration and publishing of my correspondences by all the dailies.

Mr. Edison Jefford, Co-coordinator of the President/Jefford Linden Meet, I am not the enemy and as an independent sports enthusiast, I am merely transmitting concerns which I honestly believe that you should consider addressing as a responsible national sports awardee and a former sports personality.

Some persons feel that you are a “Promoter” of the Linden Meet rather than someone who truly has athletics in your heart of hearts and truly wants to witness its development. In layman terms, it’s only about the revenue gain you are interested…This comes greatly with the current condition of the Mackenzie Sports Ground. After running the event for the past two years prior to 2012 and from whatever revenue was collected have you ever contributed any monetary assistance to the administrator/Linden Town Council to assist with the development of the sports ground?
If you did, it simply means that you got conned and from the images the medium highlighted of the Mackenzie Sports Ground, it’s an embarrassment towards sports development in Guyana. It’s also mind-boggling to think and witness athletes would risk competing on such a disgraceful site of that ground. Well, on the other hand it could be for the monetary prize giveaways.
Or is it that someone will now respond and say that is the Ministry of Sports responsibility to have the Mackenzie Sports Ground transformed or fixed…

Another concern that has been discussed is that President/Jefford Committee is a two-member one with you and Mr. Colin Boyce, President of the Athletics Association of Guyana.
Col. John Lewis, newly elected President of the GRFU just recently submitted the names of all the committee members via the dailies and I honestly believe that you should consider introducing your committee members to the public.
This will help tremendously in clearing the air that your committee is not a two-member one.

Because the Linden meet carries partially the name “President” I take it that it’s an event that has been sanctioned by the Ministry of Sports, you are above board with your revenue books and the Ministry of Sports has been supplied with audited financial reports for the past two years.

I am out here in the fields and on many occasions I am fighting by telling others that all is not lost with sports development and when responsible persons holding posts keep failing and disappointing that defence, the interest by the public for the/any sport keeps diminishing and it is indeed sad to see the failure of sports in Guyana.
It will not be my loss because as a sports enthusiast I have never stopped following the progress of the international elite athletes.
