The weekend in Berbice
FROM all indications, the concept of a safe neighbourhood is one that is gaining more attention as the benefits become more visible.
This concept of safe neighbourhoods is one whereby mechanisms are developed that lead to citizens feeling safer in their homes and walking the streets in their communities. Coupled with that young people who at some point would have had difficulties determining their future are empowered to now take charge of their lives, greatly diminishing opportunities for anti-social and deviant behaviour.
It is engaging the widely acknowledged practice of addressing crime through violence-prevention activities.
Last weekend, the communities of Port Mourant and Rose Hall in Region 6, witnessed several interventions that can only augur fit for their well- being and development.
Through its Community Action Component, the Citizen Security Programme commissioned some nine Rapid Impact
Projects that would bring immediate benefits to thousands of residents. These range from addressing environmental problems to enhancing sporting facilities and establishing multi-purpose centres.
It is noteworthy to recognise the roles that communities and organisations play in these ventures. In these particular instances the St Francis Xavier outfit was very much involved. The partnership with the Ministry of Home Affairs/Citizen Security Programme and Communities was also highly commended and sentiments were expressed for this to continue.
At each location, residents and beneficiaries turned out to witness the commissioning and have discourse with the Hon Minister Clement Rohee, and officials of the region and the CSP. It was natural for the minister to implore the good use and care of the facilities.
During the event-filled weekend, the CSP/CAC also graduated more than a hundred youths in the third batch, who successfully completed training in a number of areas in the Youth Life Skills and Vocational Training Programme.
There were three such exercises with exuberant and confident young people now ready to launch into the world of work. At each ceremony, the young people were commended for their efforts and dedication. Minister Rohee in delivering the charges urged the business community as well as residents to play their parts in providing support opportunities for employment. He noted that these interventions represent a tangible effort at meaningfully harnessing the human resources for the benefit of not only the individuals, but communities and the country as a whole.
