–late crop ready for reaping
ESSEQUIBO Coast farmers are currently using the rainy weather to sow their fields with paddy. Reports are that sowing is in progress in the southern areas of Golden Fleece, Aurora, Cullen and Zorg-en-Vlugt; in the central areas of Anna Regina, Reliance, La Belle Alliance and Lima; and in several areas in the north, such as Devonshire Castle, Hampton Court, Walton Hall and Better Success. In all, some 32,500 acres are expected to be sown.
The Drainage & Irrigation Department of the Region 2 administration is accordingly releasing water from its conservancies into irrigation canals to facilitate sowing of the rice fields.
Meanwhile, reports are that several acres with ripe rice at Better Success and Cozier are ready for harvest. Those fields were sown late, but farmers are looking forward to good weather, so that they could harvest their produce. However, access dams to the fields are quite deteriorated.
