GOVERNMENT is mulling the idea of locating the offices of the Natural Resources Sector at the former Guyana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) building on High Street Georgetown. This was disclosed by Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon last week, at his post-Cabinet media briefing. He was at the time responding to a question posed by the media on the status of the building, since work had been halted sometime ago.
“We started out with the Ministry of Labour and I think now the vision is the Natural Resources Sector as one possibility. You know the GGMC is said to be overcrowded and its activities smelting as well as the clerical and the regulatory work all being carried out enclosed in that Brickdam location, has been a subject of some discomfort to the staff,” Dr. Luncheon explained.
The HPS noted that the building represents a formidable challenge for the administration, given the fact that much has been put into the building with regard to finance, amounting to millions of dollars.
He said though work has been halted, the potential tenant will determine the final design of the building.
“In essence, if we were still putting the GRA in that building much of what is being done at the NIS building in Camp Street would have had to be done at that building.
Though there has been a halt on construction of the building, Luncheon informed that since the beginning of 2012 there has been a number of discussions with potential tenants within the ambit of government ministries to be eventual inhabitants of the building.
Questions had surfaced in the media last year with regard to what the government would be doing with the building.
On March 1 2004, the Guyana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and the Guyana Television Broadcasting Corporation (GTV) merged to form a new company, National Communications Network (NCN).
