A SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD lad was charged yesterday with the May 16 murder of his lessons classmate. Akeem Roberts (no address given) appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton on the charge that he murdered Shane George and was remanded to prison until June 11.
The teenager was unrepresented by legal counsel, nor was any parent or relative present in the courtroom during his appearance.
The magistrate asked a probation officer to stand while the allegation was read to Roberts, who stood expressionless in the dock throughout the brief proceedings.
Initial reports said George was fatally stabbed at the Morgan Learning Centre, on John Street, Campbellville.
The incident is reported to have followed taunting over who was wearing brandname clothing and investigators said a knife was used to stab the student of St. George’s High School, on Company Path, also in Georgetown.
Meanwhile, a post mortem examination on the body of George
gave his cause of death as punctures to the heart and lung, caused by a pointed object 13 inches long.
George, who is a fourth form student of St. George’s High School, lived with his parents at 144 Roxanne Burnham Drive, was allegedly stabbed by the suspect with whom he had a misunderstanding over ‘brand name’ clothing. The incident happened shortly after 16:30 hrs, in public view, outside of his place of lessons in John Street, Campbellville.
The wounded teen was rushed to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead, moments later.
Relatives on learning of the lad’s death, rushed down to the GPHC and were inconsolable on realising that what they feared most was true. Deep anguish prevailed as relatives, classmates and scores of others converged and wept openly outside the hospital’s A&E Unit.
Shane George leaves to mourn: his parents Odel and Simone George; one sibling – Chamika George; grandparents, Ruby Chapelle and Simeon; uncle Wayne Baker and other relatives and friends.
