GUYANA and the People’s Republic of China have shared fruitful bilateral relations over the years, and will, next month, be celebrating the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties. This is according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon, during his weekly press briefing last Wednesday in the Office of the President, at Shiv Chanderpaul Drive in Georgetown.
Dr Luncheon said that, in 1972, Guyana became the first CARICOM state to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China; and in June 2012, the two countries would be celebrating the 40th anniversary of that historic occasion.

To this end, Dr. Luncheon announced that Cabinet has considered and approved a commemorative programme of activities to mark the occasion.
The highlight would be activities on June 27, which range from mutual visits between China and Guyana, cultural events and exhibitions hosted in both capitals, and historic review of events over this period, to the issuance of commemorative stamps.
“Over those 40 years of bilateral diplomatic relations, the engagements have grown significantly; and with mutual benefits,” the Cabinet Secretary posited.

“In the case of Guyana, those include — but are not limited to – trade; economic development; human resource development; developmental aid; military, scientific and cultural support for Guyana,” he outlined.
The bilateral relations between Guyana and China have developed smoothly since the two nations established diplomatic relations in 1972, and the two countries have enjoyed an extremely cordial and fruitful relationship.
