THE Queenstown-based Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), home of cricketing greats Lance Gibbs, Clive Lloyd, Roy Fredericks and Roger Harper amongst others, is celebrating its Centennial Anniversary this year. During this momentous year, the Club will be hosting a number of fund-raising events aimed at achieving the objectives of fostering the development of the Club’s infrastructure and practice facilities, to benefit both the club’s cricketers as well as the community as a whole.
In this regard, The Demerara Cricket Club Centenary Committee’ is in the process of producing its centenary magazine and as such is seeking partnerships with private and public corporate entities to accompany us on this journey, not only to secure the printing and publishing of this historic magazine, but also to make it a collector’s item.
In addition, the decision to collaborate with corporate Guyana at this junction of DCC’s history is not only for investment for a one-of-a-kind magazine, but also to create better cricketing facilities and continue the production of quality players over the long term.
This they believe will continue the long legacy of the club which is known regionally and internationally.
DCC is also a home away from home for our country’s youths where cricket and other sporting activities are available for all to enjoy. The club and its activities have contributed to keeping the youths to be gainfully involved in the club’s affairs.
Currently, we have 120 male and female youths within the ages of 9 to 19 who are collectively, an integral part of the nursery of our club, under the astute guidance of Garvin Nedd the coach, a press release from the club stated.
In the various competitions within the past few years the club normally provides two teams because of the number of players attracted to it and has been champion of many club competitions and leading team at this very important grassroots level.
Therefore, in order for us to continue to contribute to Guyana and West Indies cricket, we believe there is a need to be more scientific. Hence our moves to better equip our youths with the tools necessary at this very important grassroots level.
On the centenary itself, the month of July will see us celebrate and organise a number of events such as matches against Friends of Former Guyanese Cricketers, Police Sports Club, Atlantis Cricket Club from New York, Men’s Cooking Competition and a dinner and dance all at club’s Queenstown-based ground and pavilion.
The cricket matches will involve past, present and overseas players of the club and already, a number of corporate entities have signalled their intention to partner with us and we implore other corporate entities to come on board with us as we celebrate one hundred years.
In addition, we are in talks with one of the beverage giants in hosting a t20 festival with add-ons and in this regard, all funds generated from these activities and surplus from the collector’s magazine will be used to improve the club’s infrastructure and fund youth development programmes.
