‘Moonlighting’ cop robbed of police property
TWO men who, allegedly, robbed a policeman ‘moonlighting’ as a taxi driver, of a pistol and matching rounds belonging to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), were remanded to prison when they appeared at the New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice, on Wednesday.
Shawn Wood called ‘Tall Man’, 36, of Sophia and Andrew Davis alias ‘Fat Man’, 25, of Lot 3026 North Ruimveldt, also in Greater Georgetown, were charged, as well, with attempting to commit a felony- theft of a motor car valued $2M.
A third man, Marlon D’Andrade, of Limlair, Corentyne, faced two counts of aiding and abetting Wood and Davis in committing the offences on May 3, at Palmyra Village, Canje, Berbice.
Magistrate Adela Nagamotoo was told that Wood and Davis, unknowingly, hired Police Constable Prem Narine, who was working as a taxi driver at the time, to transport them from Georgetown to East Berbice.
However, shortly after they crossed the Berbice River Bridge, the two passengers requested that the driver stop and pick up D’Anrade, who was waiting along the roadway and it was then that the armed men robbed the undercover cop of the 9 mm gun and eight matching rounds, valued $187,200, being police property.
During the incident, ranks on mobile patrol were alerted and assisted in arresting the trio, from whom the stolen articles were recovered.
Objecting to pre-trial freedom for the men, Police Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, said, should they be granted bail, the defendants may not attend their trial as they reside out of the jurisdiction.
The three are to be back in court on May 21.
