Garraway smokes field at World Athletics Day C/ships

NATIONAL Under-17 athlete Tevin Garraway lived up to expectations when the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) held the global symbolic IAAF World Athletics Day Championship at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary, by dominating the field in the 100 metres. The 16-year-old Garraway, a 2012 Carifta games finalist in the same event, clocked 11.4 seconds in the Boys’ Under-18 100 metres. Even though the ground was damp from overnight and early morning rain, he eased home ahead of Samuel Doris (11.8) and Jason Yaw who clocked 12.1 seconds.
Running Brave’s Shaquane Daniels who occupied the penultimate position in last year’s female Under-18 100 metres when she clocked 13.2 seconds, had much to smile about this time around, as she carted off the marquee event in a time of 12.7 seconds.
Déjà Smartt, who represented Ruralites Track Club, finished second, two hundredths of a second slower than Daniels, with Susan Moshett of Upper Demerara third in 13.2 seconds.
Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) gold medallist, Ernesto Thomas (2:06.1 seconds) was equally impressive as Garraway and Daniels. He claimed the top podium spot in the U-18 Boys’ 800 metres.
Mark Jarvis (2:07.6 seconds) of Mercury Faster Laners (MFL) who finished second, sensed victory after starting his sprint for home 120 metres away from the finish line, only to see Thomas’ powerful finish relegating him to second position, with Upper Demerara’s Shaquille Smartt a distant third in 2.15:5 seconds.
Shemaine Daniels had little to worry about when she took the Under-18 Girls’ 400 metres in a time of 1:01.7 seconds, while Avon Samuels and Dequan Vancooten dominated Under-16 80 metres for Boys and Girls respectively, with Samuels registering a time of 9.6 seconds and Vancooten 9.1 seconds.
Ruth Samogan and Briana Trotman turned in 10 seconds and 10.4 seconds behind Samuels, while Darryl Dublin was second in 9.3 seconds and Shaquane Williams third in 9.9 seconds to Vancooten.
Cassey George won the 1 000m in 3:16.9 seconds to leave Cassie Kirton to battle for the runner-up position in 3:26.5 seconds, even as Jamal Johnson took the male version of the race in a time of 3:03.6 seconds.
Kennyah Baird, Cassie Kirton and Orlando Adams were victorious in the field events, with Baird taking the Girl’s shot put with a throw of 3m: 90cm; Kirton threw the discus 13m: 46cm in the female category and Adams 20m: 32cm in the male category.
Meanwhile, Christianburg Wismar Secondary School amassed 48 points to win the Inter-School category of the Championship, ahead of New Campbellville Secondary School and New Silvercity Secondary who were second and third with 30 and 21 points respectively.
