A 15-year-old Vryman’s Erven Secondary School student , who violated an order to remain in the care of the Human and Social Services Department , and whose single-parent mother reportedly stated she could not control her, was sentenced to three years at the New Opportunity Corps, Onderneeming, Essequibo Coast. The ruling was made by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo , after Probation and Welfare Officer Ms. Maisie Sheppard reported that the Form Three student was constantly rude to her biological mother , who was embarrassed and disgusted at her daughter’s behaviour.
Due to the juvenile’s wandering spells, she had visited the juvenile centre at the Central Police Station, where she was spoken to repeatedly by the officer, whose instructions fell on ‘deaf ears’.
The teen was subsequently placed in the care of the Department of Social Services for a year, but breached the court order, and again wandered on March 23.
Residents of the squatters’ community told the Probation and Welfare Officer that the teenager, whom they described as uncontrollable, would physically and verbally assault her mother and older siblings.
However, her Headmaster, Mr Mangra reported that during the September to March term , she attended 174 sessions out of the 266 teaching days . While he reported that the teen has lost interest in academic studies, she excelled at athletics.
Police Inspector Jairam Ramlakhan, had told the court that on March 27, the teen had left her Angoy’s Avenue home with a friend to walk a dog, but never returned. Instead, she was picked up on the roadway by the police.
