HUMAN Resources Management and Organisational Development Specialist, Ms. Sandra Jones, was sworn in as a new Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Commissioner yesterday. She took the oath in the presence of President Donald Ramotar, at Office of the President, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown. Others present included GECOM Chairman, Dr. Steve Surujbally, Chief Elections Officer, Mr. Goocool Boodhoo and Leader of the Opposition and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Mr. David Granger.
Jones replaces the late Mr. Robert Williams, who died in January.
President Ramotar, congratulating the new Commissioner and extending his best wishes, told her: “I am happy that this vacancy has been filled and that the Elections Commission now has the full complement.
“I hope that they will meet very often and continue the work that they have been doing, because I think that it is, probably, one of the most important institutions in our country and you are sitting in a very important position there.”
The Head of State reiterated that, in his view, GECOM is “an important foundation for the development of our country socially, politically and economically.”
After swearing, in the Credentials Room at OP, to faithfully execute the office of Member of GECOM, Jones said:“I feel particularly honoured, this afternoon, to be charged with this responsibility and, as I said earlier, I do solemnly swear that I will do the best I can for the Republic of Guyana.”
She has some 25 years experience as a human resources management and organisational development specialist and is a nominee of APNU.
