TWO elderly women from Victoria Village, East Coast Demerara were each placed on $15,000 bail at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court after they pleaded not guilty to charges that they allegedly assaulted each other. The police contend that on April 11, 2012, at Victoria, East Coast Demerara, senior citizen Volda Tanner allegedly assaulted her contemporary, Sandra Blair, while Blair was similarly charged for assaulting Tanner.
In her explanation, Ms. Tanner told Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin that Ms. Blair was the aggressor in the matter. She reiterated that, on the day in question, she was talking to a bread vendor in the village when Blair came up and accused her of “talking her name”, before pulling out an umbrella and dealing her some vigorous blows about her body, while warning her to stop “talking her name”.
Tanner alleged that, at that point, she only acted in self defence when she took away the umbrella from Blair and dealt her some similar blows.
After deciding to let both accused reserve their alibi for trial, Magistrate Nyasha Williams –Hatmin placed each senior citizen on $15,000 bail, and adjourned the matter to June 20, for continuation.
