Five held by CANU after airport cocaine bust

HEAD of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), Mr. James Singh disclosed that five persons have been detained following a cocaine bust early yesterday morning at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA). He said two of the five are expected to be charged shortly.
CANU agents intercepted five kilogrammes of the narcotic that was about to be loaded onto a New York-bound EZjet aircraft.
Five baggage handlers, employed by Timehri Handling Services and working on the same shift, were still in CANU custody late Thursday morning.
The discovery of the drug was made around 05:30 hrs and it was the second such seizure at that airport, recently, following another on March 11, when 10 kilogrammes of cocaine, in two bags, were thrown over a fence.
The four-month-old EZjet, operated by a Guyanese-American investor, does charters with a Boeing 737 to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
