D&I Department ready to irrigate rice fields

REGION Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) Chairman, Mr. Parmanand Persaud has announced that the Drainage and Irrigation (D&I) Department of the Regional Administration is ready to release water to irrigate rice fields for the Autumn Crop. He said harvesting of the Spring Crop is almost completed and farmers are currently ploughing and chipping their lands in the hot weather.
Persaud said the Administration is also constantly keeping check on the level of water in conservancies and irrigation canals in the continuing hot, dry weather.
Some 32,500 acres are expected to be ploughed, chipped and put under cultivation for the Autumn Crop.
Meanwhile, reports said 15,556 acres have so far been ploughed, while paddy is still to be harvested from another 4,000 acres, mostly in the North of Essequibo Coast.
The fields, from which grains have been reaped, up to now, yielded about 800,000 bags of paddy and planters were able to transport the produce quickly from fields to factories because of the efficiency with which the Regional Administration prepared and levelled access dams in cultivation areas.
