Bandits butcher miner after invading camp

–  one in police custody
MINER Travis De Souza, 29, of Lot 13 Section ‘C’, Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara, was asleep with his girlfriend in his mining camp at Tiger Creek, Puruni, Region 7 (Cuyuni/Mazaruni) on April 21, when four men entered, at about 04:00 hrs on Saturday, and began chopping him about the body.
De Souza had gone home to spend the Easter holidays with his relatives, and had returned to work when he was murdered.
Yesterday, police said they arrested at Tiger Creek, on April 22, a suspect who had in his possession 10 grammes of cocaine and 110 grammes of marijuana.
In a statement issued earlier this month, police had said that there had been a continued decrease in murders during this year, in comparison to the same period last year.
A total of 33 murders were recorded at the end of March 2011, in comparison with 28 murders for the similar period this year, thus   recording a 15% decrease.
Of the 28 murders, 13 were of the disorderly type; six were domestic related, and one was execution type; while classification of the other eight is so far unknown.
