LED by the tournament’s leading goalscorer Colwyn David, Linden Technical Institute (LTI) continued their unbeaten run as they hammered out a 4-1 win over Mackenzie High School (MHS) in one of the semifinals of the Edward Screw Richmond Memorial Under-20 football championship on Tuesday afternoon while New Silvercity Secondary blotted out Christianburg/Wismar Secondary 2-0, in what were first of a two-way encounter in this annual championship, at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground. Actually, Mackenzie High School earned their final-four spot when they were elevated following Harmony Secondary School’s unwillingness to replay a previous fixture that became the source of a protest. LTI had finished the group stage of the nine-team tournament as the number one seed having won seven of their eight matches with the other being a draw. David netted a double in the 20th and 61st minutes of the game while Clarence Huggins also struck twice in the 28th and 67th minutes and for the losing Mackenzie High School Rolex John pulled one back in the 70th minute.
MHS will need to hold off LTI and win by at least three clear goals to see their participation in the championship game.
The other first-leg semifinal saw New Silvercity Secondary (NSSS) brush aside Christianburg/Wismar Secondary (CWSS) 2-0 behind a double by Mark Hope which came in the 2nd and 9th minutes of play. The CWSS have the away goal rule to try and capitalise on, to turn their fortunes around when they play NSSS in the return leg The last of the Group games was scheduled for last Thursday.
