OUTAR Hariprashad (no address given) was sentenced to seven days imprisonment yesterday, for threatening to kill his reputed wife Sohodra Bharrat. Before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, he pleaded guilty to the charge, which said, on April 17, he made use of threatening language to Bharrat.
Police Sergeant Denise Booker, prosecuting, informed the Court that the defendant is a constant abuser of alcohol and he would, usually, abuse the virtual complainant.
The Prosecutor said, that day, Bharrat managed to persuade Hariprashad to subject himself to counselling at the Ministry of Human Services.
However, when the couple turned up at the Ministry, the counselor was not present and the defendant told the virtual complainant he would kill her when they return home. She became fearful and made a report.
Hariprashad admitted that he was angry when he threatened his reputed wife but promised not to do it again and apologised.
But the magistrate imposed the sentence, due to the prevalence of domestic violence, noting that the prisoner’s use of alcohol is another aggravating factor.
