THE Guyana Fire Service responded to a call from employees of the Supreme Court in Georgetown shortly after nine o’ clock yesterday morning, not to fight a fire, but to free their pet cat, which had lost its way, was wandering on the rooftop of the Supreme Court, and could not find its way to safety. Arriving on scene, fire fighters saw an apparently pitiable black & white cat on the rooftop, moving around in a circle, watching skywards and meowing as if waiting for help and attention.
Affixing a ladder to the building, a fire fighter climbed to the roof where, with little effort, he held the cat and took it to safety, handing the animal to an employee of the court.
The employees there seemed concerned for the welfare of the cat, as they would in respect to the life of a human being. The cat is said to be a pet of the employees of the Accounts Department of the Supreme Court.
Reports are that the cat had been missing since the previous day, and could not be located; but yesterday morning, an employee saw the animal moving about on the rooftop, raised an alarm, and a secretary from one of the departments summoned the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) for help, pointing out that their pet had lost its way on the roof top.
Concerned about the safety of the cat, the GFS turned up promptly and went into operation, thereby bringing the cat to safety.
The big question remains: How did the cat find its way on the roof? No one seems able to answer.
However, from its appearance yesterday after experiencing its ordeal, one could very well say that the cat would not relish another rooftop expedition in a hurry.
