Pensioners could always look forward to this government

I AM writing about the pensioners, specifically old age pensioners. This aspect of the 2012 budget has drawn some of the most vociferous comments, since the announcement that there will be an increase to its beneficiaries, as from May 1, 2012. This increase will move the level of payment from $7,500 to $8,100 per month. The main argument is that such an increase is not only wholly inadequate, but also that it cannot suffice to take care of the basics for a group of persons who are not in any form of employment.
Now, there are some points that must be considered.
First, a pension, such as this category, payable by the state to the over 65s, is really a form of social security; and, as I understand the philosophy that underlines such a programme, is that, it is not designed to make the recipients better off than they were prior to receipt.
Second, without having the guidance of statistics, there may be many of our old age pensioners who are gainfully employed, and whose general economic circumstances are better than many of their peers.
Third, quite a number of our pensioners live with other family members, and therefore have many of their general needs met.
No one is arguing that such a sum is adequate  to cope with what is agreed is a challenging, daily economic existence. But what must be appreciated is that many of our senior citizens in receipt of old age pensions are not so badly off, as is being trumpeted by the opposition. Thanks to the removal of the means test by the PPP/C government many, who may not have otherwise qualified, are in receipt of this state consideration.
There is no doubt, that this social assistance category will continue to be increased, because of the government’s care and love for the golden oldies.
