Cuban coach to raise level of Amateur Boxing training

… MCYS donates gear to GABA
AT a simple ceremony yesterday, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) donated some boxing gear to the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) to help in their development of boxers.
The equipment, according to Minister of Sport Dr Frank Anthony, consisted of just a few items requested in the new dimension, which will be added to the sport. A professional Cuban boxing coach is expected to help with raising the level of amateur training and has made a request that the items be added to their arsenal.
Boxing gloves, head guards, sledge hammers and mouth guards were some of the items handed over by Dr Anthony to GABA president Steve Ninvalle in the presence of Director of Sport Neil Kumar and members of GABA.
“The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport is pleased to support boxing and always has been. As you know we have been doing things over the years because amateur boxing has been doing well,” Dr. Anthony said.
He said that he would like to see the quality of the boxing programmes raised and that is why the professional coach has been hired for the two-year assignment ahead of the Olympics in 2014.
The Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Gym in Albouystown has been dedicated as the Premier Boxing Site on the road to London.
The minister went on to say: “This is an initial contribution and it is not going to stop here. This sport has won a lot of medals for the country and given the proper support I think that this sport has more capacity to win medals than any other sport.
Responding to Dr Anthony’s remarks Ninvalle thanked the minister for the equipment which they have continuously asked for and assured the minister that the gear will be put to maximum use.
He stated that they will soon be hosting an Under-16 tournament so that the Cuban coach will be able to view the amateur boxing pool.
