AT a simple handing-over ceremony held in the National Park yesterday, telecommunication giant Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) handed over a cheque for G$1M to the Guyana Tennis Association, toward the rehabilitation of the National Park’s lawn tennis courts. GTA president Christopher Ram in his brief overview of the project, highlighted the response made by the telephone company and saw speedy intervention by the National Park Commission in getting the facility, which he referred to as the ‘cradle facility’ for tennis in Guyana, rehabilitated.
Ram said that over five years, the facility has been in need of rehabilitation and he is satisfied to date on the progress works done by contractor Errol Cush and company.
The facility is being used by the Park Players and Ram made note of the development which this facility has contributed with the coaches today, wherein Guyana and the GTA are proud of the players’ latest achievements in defeating the juniors of Trinidad and Tobago and Panama in the just concluded Fed/Davis Cup tournament in Santa Domingo.
In handing over the cheque GT&T Finance Controller Royston Rachpaul expressed his Company’s gratitude in showing again to Guyana, their corporate responsibility in contributing to the development of sports, with lawn tennis being the beneficiary at this time.
He noted that he has been a follower of the sport at international level for a number of years and hopes to see Guyana one day in the world ratings.
He explained that with such a facility and the development in place for moving the sport to another level, one can look forward to seeing Guyana on the map. He wished the GTA all the best on behalf of GT&T’s Chief Executive Officer Yog Mahadeo.
