ONE hundred and seventy-seven, of the 228 prisoners at the Georgetown Prison, are awaiting trial for murder at the April criminal sessions of the Demerara Assizes beginning next Tuesday. This was reported to Justice Franklyn Holder when he took the Jail Delivery yesterday at the close of the close of the January sessions.
Superintendent of Prisons, Linden Corrnett, who made the report, said 26 of the incarcerated prisoners are requesting early trials.
He said the list includes five attempted murder accused, 22 indicted for carnal knowledge, two for incest, three for armed, three for buggery, one for aid and abetting murder, one for abduction and eight for rape.
