CONVICTED murderer Burt Lancester, who was sentenced to death last March 14, for the murder of taxi driver Deonarine Sukhdeo, has filed an appeal against his conviction and sentence. Lancaster, who was represented at his trial by attorney-at-law, Mr. Basil Williams has cited five grounds of appeal, including that the jury’s verdict was unreasonable and cannot be supported having regard to the evidence.
The prisoner is claiming that the trial judge did not deal adequately with the inconsistencies and discrepancies raised in the testimony nor the case for the defence.
Lancaster is also complaining that it was wrong for the judge to decline jurisdiction to determine the question of the unlawfulness of a plea agreement between the appellant’s co-accused and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The prisoner is also citing, as an error in law, a ruling that the judge had no jurisdiction to hear a submission, in limine, that the appellant’s constitutional right to a fair hearing was being, was likely to be or was contravened.
