Prisoner stole phones from women on consecutive days
ACTING Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry sentenced Ramesh Ramnarine (no address given) to 18 months imprisonment, after he pleaded guilty yesterday, to charges of larceny from the person and simple larceny. Particulars of the offences said, on March 21, he stole one gold chain and a cell phone, valued a total of $104,000, from Alfia Parks and, on March 22, he stole a cell phone worth $20,000, property of Tracey Wilson.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said on March 21, Parks was standing on a roadway when the thief snatched her chain and phone.
The prosecutor said the virtual complainant made a report and described the snatcher to police.
Harvey said, on March 22, Wilson was at Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) when Ramnarine asked her to borrow her phone to make a call.
The woman lent him the phone and went to the washroom but, when she returned to where he was, Ramnarine was nowhere around, the prosecutor said.
The convict was, subsequently, arrested, based on the description given by the women from whom he stole, the prosecutor said, adding that Ramnarine admitted the thefts when apprehended.
