POLICE yesterday issued a press release outlining the circumstances that occasioned the death of two-month-old baby boy Andy Hunte of Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara, who died at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) on Tuesday after sustaining injuries in an altercation between his parents. According to the police, their investigations have revealed that, at about 12:30 hrs on Tuesday, the child’s father came home and did not see the mother or the child. He later found the mother and child in a shop, and began to beat the woman with a belt. In the process, the belt ‘buckle’ struck the child to his head. The child was taken to the GPH, where he subsequently succumbed.
The police also confirmed that both parents are in custody assisting with the investigations. However, in our article published yesterday, it was stated that the child died while being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was struck by a pressure pot the mother pelted at his father during a misunderstanding.
The article had also mentioned that the father was at home holding the baby in his arms when the incident occurred. This was the information given to the hospital authorities by the father, who gave his name as James Hunte of 78 Le Ressouvenir, and who presented the child at the health institution then left the hospital compound after doing so.
The man is also alleged to have told health authorities and police at the hospital compound that his wife had panicked and run away from the home after the child was struck by the blow.
Hospital authorities confirmed on Tuesday evening that the child had suffered a deep laceration to the forehead and a fractured skull.
This newspaper regret any inaccurate information conveyed, but stand by our word that it was the information given to the hospital authorities by the man who made the report, both to the police outpost at the entrance to the hospital compound and to hospital staff at the Accident and Emergency Unit.
A post-mortem examination is to be conducted on the body of little Andy Hunte, and police are continuing their investigations into his death.
