– to boost literacy in Berbice schools
A PARTNERSHIP between Food for the Poor [FFP] and St Francis Community Developers [SFCD], resulted in several learning institutions in Berbice being better able to improve their literacy skills, following a donation in excess of $2M worth in books, CD ROMs, and DVD’s.
The gift, which attracts persons from the various levels of education, was handed over to the school’s representatives at the SFCD annex, Port Mourant, last Wednesday.
During the presentation, SFCD President Mr Alex Foster, noted that the books and other learning instruments, covers all subject areas and is intended to improve the school’s library and reading rooms.
He observed that in order for the students to be successful, and gain the expected results, a holistic approach needs to be adapted.
“With this in mind, the organisations are distributing freely, hundreds of literature which will better equip our youth,” Foster said.
Beneficiaries included New Amsterdam Multilateral, Tutorial Academy, Lower Corentyne Secondary, Winifred Gaskin Secondary, Rose Hall Primary and Ankerville Nursery Schools.
Meanwhile, Foster took the opportunity to express gratitude to the goodwill shown by newly elected President Donald Ramotar and Regional Chairman David Armagon, for their interest in community development in Region 6.
The St Francis Community Developers, an umbrella organisation, has been in existence for over 25 years. The organisation, formerly known as the St Xavier Catholic Club is aimed to encourage and support the educational and moral upliftment of residents in target communities in Region 6.
