Ruimveldt man gets four years for ganja trafficking in Berbice

FORTY-year-old David Grant of Lot 3066 North Ruimveldt, Georgetown was sentenced to four years imprisonment by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when he appeared in the New Amsterdam Court. He was also fined $847,200 after he was found guilty of trafficking  4Kg 800grams of cannabis sativa. According to the caution statement of Grant which was admitted into evidence, on  October 14, 2011 , he travelled to  D’ Veldt , Berbice River, where he purchased portions of the hemp plant, in order to resell in the capital city, Georgetown.
After leaving the riverine community, he journeyed to Brother’s Village on the East Bank of Berbice where, still in possession of the marijuana, he went into the vicinity of the Digicel Tower where he made a telephone call for a taxi to transport him to New Amsterdam.
When the car arrived, the illegal drug was placed in the rear seat of the vehicle, prior to him instructing the driver to motor to Levi Dam, Angoy’s Avenue [on the outskirts of the township].
However, whilst the car was in motion, police on mobile patrol, stopped the vehicle and conducted a random check.
Grant admitted being the owner of the multi coloured bag, which, when opened, revealed portions of the illegal plant.
Police Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, said Grant was thereafter arrested and taken to Central Police Station, where charges were instituted.
