THE preliminary inquiry (PI) into the charge against Michael Anthony Persaud, 22, of Lot 8 North Sophia, Greater Georgetown, who is accused of murdering his reputed wife, Madhuri Padummbeo, commenced yesterday. Assistant Superintendent of Police Robert Tyndall, prosecuting, called Sergeant Tricia Beckles as the first witness. She had arrested the accused and was cross-examined by Senior Counsel Bernard De Santos before Magistrate Judy Latchman, who is presiding, adjourned the proceedings to March 21.
Persaud made his first court appearance on December 29, 2011, charged with the capital offence, particulars of which said it was committed on December 22, 2011.
On that occasion, Police Corporal Jairam Luckhai, prosecuting, said the accused and the victim had been seen, by neighbours, fighting in the yard outside their home and the husband later took the woman inside the house.
However, around 11:00hrs that day, when the woman’s employer went to her residence to enquire why she did not show up for work, she found the couple in bed, with a length of red and white wire wrapped around the neck of the corpse.
