Bail recalled, defendant remanded in shooting case

CHRIS Balkaran, of Lot 37 Seaforth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, was remanded to prison yesterday, on a charge of discharging a loaded firearm with intent. Before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, he pleaded not guilty to the offence which said, on September 14, 2011, he discharged a gun at Victor Duncan intending to maim, disfigure or cause him grievous bodily harm.
Police Corporal Jairam Luckhai, prosecuting, told the court the two men know each other and, on that day, the defendant went to a shop where he and the virtual complainant had an exchange of words.
The prosecutor said, later the same day, the defendant went up to the virtual complainant with the gun and fired a round which hit Duncan on his left, upper thigh.
Balkaran was granted $$150,000 bail but after the magistrate learnt that he has a pending case and has not been attending court, she recalled the bond  and ordered him to return on March 20.
