– as part of the school’s history syllabus
AN 85-member team comprising students from the St Vincent High School will spend the next eight days exploring parts of Guyana. Representatives of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) yesterday afternoon welcomed the first batch of the students to arrive at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport at Timehri. Carla James, Marketing Manager, GTA presented the group leader and teacher Shereline Roberts with a small welcome package whilst the students were given posters of tourism scenes in Guyana and booklets and DVDs on Guyana.
Roberts said the trip is part of schools’ history and geography curriculum for its fourth form students. She said that five years ago the schools took the initiative to embark on the venture to visit different countries as a way of inspiring the students and, at the same time, refresh their view that history is tedious. The students are currently studying the bauxite industry and the Amerindian villages in Guyana and as such the visit allows the students to not only experience the culture of Guyana but to also get a first-hand view of what they would have been reading in their text books, Robert said.
The second batch of students are expected to arrive early this evening.
