Brumell challenges GPF officers to plan future strategies
ACTING Commissioner, Leroy Brumell challenged the recently held annual Officers’ Conference to, in keeping with the vision of a modern Guyana Police Force (GPF), review, re-examine and analyse its operations, policies, administrative procedures and strategies for dealing with crime, traffic and other responsibilities. He told those gathered, at Eve Leary, Georgetown, that the GPF, in accord with its mandate, must plan for the future so that it can maintain its mission under the laws of Guyana.
The Top Cop also emphasised the necessity for the GPF’s continued strategic proactive approach to crime, using intelligence gathering, prevention and detection activities, while collaborating with its auxiliaries, government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), as well as, members of the public in the various communities.
Brumell reiterated the Force’s concern over the attitude of some members towards the public, which undermines trust and affects its image. He identified some of the activities in which the police are involved in order to garner greater support and improve public confidence.
There was appreciation, at the forum, of a presentation on the Force’s Strategic Plan 2011 to 2015, which was done by Assistant Commissioner, Balram Persaud and three other officers who are members of the Management Unit responsible for its implementation.
Significant deliberations on the training of ranks, as a catalyst for development in the GPF, were conducted by the officers, inclusive of competency in the use of appropriate foreign languages and education at the University of Guyana (UG) and overseas.
Officers were delighted to note that the construction of the modern facility, under the Citizen Security Programme (CSP), to enhance training for all ranks of the GPF has been completed and that the building, at Camp Road and Young Street, also in the city, is expected to be handed over to the Force shortly.
