GDF, Beacon United will battle for NaMilCo title

GUYANA Defence Force (GDF) made it through to the final of the NaMilCo Football Festival following a close victory over hosts Fruta Conquerors on Sunday night in the semi-final at the Tucville Playfield. Contesting the feature of the night, the army team contained the Conquerors and needled them before the regulation time whistle, to make it into the final, while the other match between Riddim Squad and Sunburst Camptown saw the latter win 2-0.
Riddim Squad were re-invited into the tournament following Alpha United’s abrupt decision to cease participation. As such, Beacon United were given a bye in to final.
This Sunday, a new champion will be crowned when GDF and Beacon United lock horns for the top prize of a million dollars. In the third place showdown Fruta Conquerors will meet Sunburst Camptown for third place.
The semis saw Riddim Squad and Conquerors both losing their matches to their opponents in the closing moments of the final half.
In the opening match of the night it was a goalless first half in the Camptown/Riddim Squad showdown but the second half had Malcolm Wilson and Ronel Gordon scoring in the 76th and 88th minutes to give Camptown the win.
Wrapping up the night was the army’s victory that also saw the teams play to a goalless first half then GDF’s Delwyn Fraser scored in the minute before regulation time to propel his side into the final round.
