WOMEN leaders of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), from the coastal regions of Guyana, met last Saturday to chart the way forward for the National Congress of Women (NCW). Involved in this Women’s Forum were the current members of the National Executive Committee of the NCW, the Female Members of Parliament associated with A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), as well as the Women Councillors of the RDCs.
National chairperson of the NCW, Ms. Cheryl Sampson, reportedly set the tone for the discussion as she outlined some proposals for charting the developmental course for women in our country.
A statement from the PNCR said that, during her discourse, the chairperson advised that in whatever programmes were to be developed, the National Congress of Women must be pro-active, visible and vocal.
The gathering was also addressed by Mr. Bevon Currie, Project Officer, who encouraged the women to organise themselves into Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and identify economic and social projects in their communities.
He also identified some of the agencies and organisations which provide funding and encouraged the women to apply and access same.
Cognisant of the fact that our women folk are the backbone of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), the participants of the Forum agreed to ensure that the interests and wellbeing of women in every community rank high on the party’s agenda.
The PNCR said participants agreed on the need to develop and implement programmes which are relevant and useful for their communities.
According to the party, the Women’s Forum ended on a high note with the commitment from the women of the PNCR that they will re-organise the women’s arm in their communities and remain mobilised in order to continue to play their roles for the development of the PNCR and the country as a whole.
