Misunderstanding between cousins results in fine for assault

ANDRE Ramcharran (no address given) appeared before Magistrate Allan Wilson yesterday, on charges of damage to property and unlawful assault. The defendant pleaded guilty to having, on February 19, unlawfully assaulted Shanwnel Europe to cause her actual bodily harm but he denied that, the same day, he maliciously damaged one lamp, valued $6,000 belonging to her.
Police Sergeant, Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said the cases stem from one incident when the defendant and the virtual complainant, who is his cousin had a misunderstanding.
The prosecutor said, when Europe’s mother ejected Ramcharran from their home, he became annoyed and kicked down the lamp which broke.
Ramcharran also choked Europe causing injury to her neck and said he did it because she first pushed him out the house and choked his neck.
He said he became annoyed and used indecent language as his aunt, who owed him money, did not return the correct amount.
Ramcharran was fined $10,000 with the alternative of six months imprisonment for the unlawful assault and was granted $5,000 bail on the damage to property charge, until March 6.
